Every candidate has a manifesto – a convoluted list of promises, a vague declaration of intent. Even I have a manifesto. It is short.

I want Direct Democracy. I believe that the voice of the electorate should be heard continuously throughout each political term and that everyone should retain the right to
raise issues
debate issues and
decide issues

That’s it. There is no more.

Of course the road to inclusive, progressive and reformed politics is beset with obstacles and that is why I offer myself as candidate for Deputy of St Clement; I wish to represent the consensus of the parish in the States. I wish to engage in debate with parishioners so that their views and aspirations may be articulated within the decision making process. I want to listen when issues are raised.

Direct Democracy works very well in Switzerland, a country noted for its stability and creditable performance on the Social Progress Index, we even practice Direct Democracy here in Jersey at a parochial level. We just need to up our game a little – true democracy is achievable!

I do have my own political views but this manifesto is not the place for them. I have views on immigration, education and healthcare; I have views on transport, housing and the changing face of St Clement. My views will be heard in debate as well as the views of others – in the end, the parish will decide and I can represent that decision whether I agree with it or not. It will be one voice in a chamber of forty nine but, if others take note of what we have started, we can change the way Jersey works.

The principle of representative democracy that we have practised for so long is that we trust someone to make decisions for us. Can I ask how that went for you last time? Have the States lived up to your expectations over the last four years? Have you been well served by a Council of Ministers? Our government has changed gradually through my lifetime; it has evolved from an honorary club of old boys into something new so we know it can change again. Direct Democracy is a credible choice and it is available at this election!
