People have asked me many times in the past if I would think of standing for Election. I never felt the time was right due to family and business commitments and that I would not have been able to fully focus on governmental work. However, today, in the words of Robert Burns “Now’s the Day and Now’s the hour”
I was born in Jersey but my formative years were spent abroad due to my father’s work, returning to the Island in 1977 at the age of 17 at a time when Tourism was booming and Jersey had a thriving economy. My late uncle Cyril Tanguy became a States member in 1960 and was to remain a Deputy of St Helier District No 1 for 18 years, serving as President of Harbours and Airport and Telecoms. I have three grown up children who were all born and educated in Jersey.
I am very much a people’s person having spent 45 years in the nightclub industry, meeting and mixing with people from all walks of life. This has given me a very good insight into what makes people happy or disillusioned with living in Jersey; from my recent experience it is very much that of the latter. I have always been happy to air my views when asked and never afraid to put my head above the parapet.
As a small business owner in St Helier, I feel there was a lack of support from government during the pandemic. Financial support for small business was slow to be implemented, to follow that, and in some cases, substantial amounts that were given through the Co-funding payroll scheme are being reclaimed. This has caused much distress to many who are only just beginning to recover.
This year following the Covid pandemic I felt it was the right time to stand and use my voice for the electorate. I would like to put something back into the community and preserve much of what is good about the Island and help to improve the quality of life for all islanders. This is a vital time as we return to some sense of normality.
I have always enjoyed being part of a team. I was very impressed by the ideas of the Jersey Alliance and the thought of working within a team framework for the good of the many rather than the few.
The policies of the Party are well laid out on our website and information will be coming through your letter box as to our vision.
As someone whose business is in St Helier, I believe I know the area well and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the coming weeks.
If I was fortunate enough to gain your confidence and your vote I will dedicate all my efforts to helping the people of St Helier Central.
